From 17 January 2025 the Mission Museum in Steyl is showing an unknown but spectacular piece of Dutch film history. The films of Father Simon Buis SVD (1892-1960) drew packed cinemas all over the world in the '20s and '30s. Buis, who made three films on the Indonesian island of Flores, won the hearts of the public with tales of forbiden love, marrying people off, neighbourhood wars and Christian love. Since he had studied film-making in the United States, Buis was soon known as "the priest from Hollywood". The exhibts reveal not only his artistic contribution but also the cultural and social context in which his films were made. It is a must-see for lovers of film history and culture.
